Abstract

TOPEL, Marta  and  SZLAK, Bruno José. The dissent from Jewish orthodoxy and its representation in the series Unorthodox. Soc. relig. [online]. 2021, vol.31, n.56, pp.45-45. ISSN 0326-9795.

The article focuses on the phenomenon of dissent from Jewish orthodoxy, assuming as a starting the Netflix series, Unorthodox (in Portuguese, Nada Ortodoxa), which aired in 2020 as part of a rising trend: the dissemination and popularity of series about Jewish Orthodox communities. Dissent, desertion or religious disaffiliation is a phenomenon little studied in Social Sciences vis-à-vis its opposite: religious conversion. Taking this gap as a reference and based on Victor Turner's approach, in the article we analyze the different stages of orthodoxy dissent, emphasizing the liminality that characterizes it.

Keywords : Judaism; Jewish Orthodoxy; Religious Dissent; Television Series.
