Abstract

LOPEZ ROBLES, Adalberto  and  REPOLL, Jerónimo. ¿Twitter reduce la polarización? El caso de la red #presidenterompaelpacto en México. Intersecc. comun. (En línea) [online]. 2022, vol.2, n.16, pp.2-2. ISSN 2250-4184.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.51385/ic.v2i16.162.

Current theoretical currents in the field of political communication point out that socio-digital networks sharpen polarization by locking users in partisan echo chambers where they are only exposed to information that reinforces their existing points of view. However, this environment also allows users to consume a wide variety of information that could mitigate the effects of polarization. This study aims to show that social-digital networks such as Twitter can facilitate, to the same extent, other organized forms of interaction that, instead of activating polarization, broaden the dialogue between various political sectors. Based on a case study, in the framework of the 2021 Guerrero state elections in Mexico, it will be observed how the mechanisms that underpin polarization can facilitate consensus dynamics. With these results, this study contributes to an ongoing debate on the relationship between socio-digital networks and polarization.
