Abstract
COELHO, Fabiano. Between hope and governance: agrarian reform, Lula government and the Brazilian Landless Worker´s Movement. Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2023, vol.58, n.2, pp.35-62. Epub Dec 18, 2023. ISSN 2314-1549. http://dx.doi.org/10.48162/rev.44.045.
In October 2002, the electoral victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) for the presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil caused a stir and aroused a sense of hope in the social rural movements and among the defenders of agrarian reform. The Landless Worker´s Movement (MST) showed, from the speeches of its leaders, that the time had come for agrarian reform. In his historical trajectory in politics, Lula constructed prospective speeches before the thematic of agrarian reform. In this direction, this work discusses the policies of agrarian reform of the Lula government (2003-2010) and the expectations created by the social movements of the field, especially the MST. In addition, it will emphasize the number of families settled and areas obtained by the government. It is understood that, despite the social advances achieved in the Lula government along eight years, the agrarian reform was not treated as a priority, nor was it included within a national development policy.
