Abstract

BIANCHIPALOMARES, Pablo Federico Ricardo. Gambling in Mendoza, Argentina: regulation policies and the first provincial state-owned Casino (1890-1925). Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2023, vol.58, n.2, pp.181-205.  Epub Dec 23, 2023. ISSN 2314-1549.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48162/rev.44.051.

The modernization operated in Argentina between the end of the 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th brought along a series of changes that had an impact not only on the materialization of built environments, but also on social practices. The capital city of the province of Mendoza, located in the center-west of Argentina sheltered, in a framework of tourism promotion policy, a "modern" leisure facility, a group of buildings consisting of Hotel, Theater and Casino. In this context, the article explores the problem of gambling and the material realization of this Casino, the first state-owned in the history of the province. Through a review of periodical publications, government memoirs and parliamentary discussions, this work seeks to investigate the difficulties and drifts involved in gambling regulation, along with material result of these policies, by delving into architectural features of the Casino building.
