Thispapercriticizesthe constitutive role thatboth Gérard Genette and Jean-Marie Schaeffergivetoattention in theaestheticrelationbetween a subject and a literarywork. At thesame time, theanalysisisusefultore-signifyNoëlCarroll’s concept ofcriterialprefocusing. Basedonstructural and narrative analysesoftheliteraryworkof art, itisarguedthataestheticattentionisnotnecessary in the aestheticrelation. In turn, itisarguedthattheaffective and aestheticstatesgeneratedbyreadingdependontherelationbetweenthereader and certain formal element sexisting in thework. Accordingly, aninterpretationofcriterialprefocusingisproposedthathighlightstheimportanceoftheinfluenceoftheauthor’schoices in thereader’saffective response.
