Abstract

NUNES PEREIRA, Sergio  and  RICCI, Carolina Paula. States, Nation and Colonialism: traces of Vidalian political geography. Bol. estud. geogr. [online]. 2023, n.120, pp.290-322.  Epub Mar 14, 2024. ISSN 2525-1813.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48162/rev.40.039.

This text was originally written to introduce the third part - titled “Political Georaphy” - of the book "Vidal, Vidais. Textos de geografia humana, regional e política" (2012), a book about the life and work of Vidal de la Blache. Specifically in this article, we aim to shed light on a thematic field that had been unsatisfactorily addressed in Vidal de la Blache’s work: political geography, understood here as an academic reflection on the strategic actions and territorial control carried out by States at diverse geographical scales. Adopting a disciplinary social history approach, we seek to address the topic considering, in addition, the influence of Ratzel’s ideas on the author and his extensive scientific knowledge, which provided him with original formulations in various branches of geography. This Spanish translation, 11 years after its original version, includes new reflections on the task and invites further exploration in the interpretation of the author and his work.

Keywords : Vidal de la Blache; political geography; social history of geography.
