Syncope is a relatively common complaint among children and adolescents. Derived from the Greek word syncoptein which means "to cut off", it refers to a transient loss of postural tone and consciousness with spontaneous recovery. Both syndrome and symptom, it has been estimated that one to five children will have a syncopal episode by reaching adulthood. Syncope produces a tremendous amount of anxiety among parents, athletic and school officers, frequently impairing patient's lifestyle. Epidemiology, causes and clinical presentation are discussed below.
