Resumen

ACOSTA GARCIA, Edgar et al. Overweight, insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia in adolescents. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2012, vol.46, n.3, pp.365-373. ISSN 0325-2957.

Based on the high prevalence of obesity found worldwide, WHO has defined obesity as the epidemic of the 21st century. Obesity has been associated with metabolic disorders recognized to increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence of overweight, insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia in a group of teenagers from a public school, in the central region of Venezuela. In addition, the capacity of biochemical and anthropometric variables to predict insulin resistance was evaluated by means of ROC curves (Receiver Operating Characteristic). Body mass index, conicity index and waist circumference were determined, and insulin and glycemia levels were measured in order to obtain the HOMA-IR index and the insulin/glycemia ratio. In addition, lipid profile, total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (c-HDL) and triglycerides (TG) were also determined, calculating cardiovascular risk based on CT/c-HDL, c-LDL/c-HDL y TG/c-HDL ratios. Results showed that about 40% of teenagers presented excessive weight (28% overweight and 12% obesity). The prevalence of dyslipidaemia was found to be 41% and 28% for insulin resistance (IR). Furthermore, the nutritional status was significantly associated with dyslipidaemia and IR (p<0.05). The most sensitive diagnostic variable for insulin resistance was found to be seric insulin, followed by glycemia/insulin ratio, seric glycemia and Triglycerid/c-HDL index. Finally, a high percentage of the population studied, though being very young, presented excessive weight, which was also associated with higher frequency of dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance.

Palabras clave : Insulin resistance; Overweight; Obesity; Dyslipidaemia; Teenagers.
