MARIA ESTELA, Cadario. Complicaciones extrapulmonares de las infecciones por Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2023, vol.57, n.1, pp.121-124. ISSN 0325-2957.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a bacterium that primarily affects the humans’ airways. However, its complications may involve other organs, either by secondary invasion, or by mechanisms related to the host’s immune response, or by a mechanism of obstruction of blood flow by the bacteria, which directly or indirectly produces the complication. Neurological (being the most frequent), dermatological, cardiac, renal, hematological, immunological, muscular, osteoarticular and gastrointestinal conditions have been described. Publications of three well-documented cases in Argentina were highlighted: one case of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, another of glomerulonephritis, and another of infective endocarditis. Upon clinical and/or serological suspicion, samples should be taken from the affected site, as well as respiratory and whole blood samples to perform a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and, if possible, a culture.
