EBENAU, Laura Andrea. FROM PROVINCIALIZATION TO RENOVATION: THE “MISIONERIDAD” AS REPERTOIRE OF POLITICAL AND MORAL LEGITIMACY. Folia [online]. 2020, n.39, pp.39-64. ISSN 0325-8238. http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.0394603.
This article explores the particular way in which the identity narrative of ‘misioneridad’, produced in the middle of the twentieth century to promote recognition as a province of the National Territory of Misiones, is articulated to the repertoire of political and moral legitimacy of the ‘Frente Renovador’ party. This party governs the province since 2003 until the present. If, as we will argue, ‘misioneridad’ contributes to shaping the party identity of an organization that came into existence in the context of the breakdown of the two-party system in Misiones, its political value is also appreciated in the efforts made by the ruling elite to update and re-enroll it in the process of building a hegemonic project. In order to account for the operations involved in this process, we analyze, from an anthropological point of view, the narratives deployed in three ethnographic events. Hence, we attend to the ways in which the protagonists weave (dis)continuities with the historical past in order to legitimize their position and, at the same time, to interpellate their contenders in disputes over political representation.
