This paper analyses the instructions written by Casimiro Gómez Ortega, and José Longinos Martínez, as artifacts designed for gathering and constructing knowledge about hispanoamerican nature. Looking at the documentary corpus produced by the hand of both naturalists, I show some of its specific characteristics in terms of content, uses, hierarchies, and aims. Posing questions about its materiality, context, and circumstances I try to explain how, more than political and government papers, instructions were personal documents that conveyed everyday writing practices, along with personal interests.
