Resumen

CERUTI, Carlos Natalio  y  RICHARD, Alejandro. Who smoking in these "cachimbos"? The collection of ceramic pipes from Santa la Vieja (Cayastá, Dpto. Garay, Prov. De Santa Fe, Argentina). Folia [online]. 2023, n.46, pp.197-218. ISSN 0325-8238.  http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.4606497.

The practices related to smoking in the colonial world of the Río de la Plata, constitute in part a continuum with those practices developed by the various indigenous groups in moments prior to the arrival of the Europeans. The colonial system, on the other hand, introduced elements that revolved around socioeconomic organization, the symbolic world, the structuring of urban and rural space, the slave institution, and an intense circulation of ideas, people, and objects. This paper delivers some preliminary results of research about the collection of ceramic pipes from Santa Fe la Vieja (17th century) highlighting the presence of European, indigenous, and African or Afro-descendant elements. A first classification of the pipes was developed according to their morphology. Moreover decorative patterns associated with the enslaved population were identified, taking into consideration their dissemination in the Atlantic space in both directions.
