Resumen

CASTAGNOLA, Abril  y  GALLIGANI, Paula E.. BIOARCHAEOLOGY IN CONTEXTS WITH LOW ANATOMICAL INTEGRITY: ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN THE STUDY OF THE HUMAN BONE RECORD FROM LAS TEJAS SITE (CORONDA, SANTA FE). Folia [online]. 2023, n.47, pp.169-190. ISSN 0325-8238.  http://dx.doi.org/10.30972/fhn.0476784.

Las Tejas (Coronda, Santa Fe) is an archaeological site located in an elevation of the Paraná alluvial plain, which remains completely underwater during flood periods. As shown in previous studies, several taphonomical processes have impacted on the anatomical integrity of the burials. Within this framework, the most preferred bones for sex attribution and age estimation are absent or fragmented. Hence, bioarchaeological analyses have not been conducted until the moment. In this paper, we present the first results from estimating age and sex of the individuals from Las Tejas site and the Las Tejas Museo collection (housed in the Museo Municipal “José Manuel Maciel”, Coronda). By the use of different methods, the informative potential of this record is reassessed in order to contribute to the knowledge of lifestyles, health and population dynamics in the Late Holocene societies which inhabited the area.

Palabras clave : human burials; disturbed samples; Paraná River Floodplain; Late Holocene.
