Resumen
GARCIA-OLASO, Felipe. Evaluation of the diagnostic characters of Oxymycterus josei Hoffmann, Lessa y Smith, 2002 (Rodentia: Cricetidae) with comments on the differentiation of the Uruguayan species of the genus. Mastozool. neotrop. [online]. 2008, vol.15, n.1, pp.117-123. ISSN 0327-9383.
Currently, there are two recognized species of the genus Oxymycterus in Uruguay: O. nasutus and O. josei. These species seem to represent a special case within the genus, as they are sympatric, genetically differentiated but morphologically very similar. Mainly, two diagnostic characters were described to distinguish them. This work evaluates the consistency of those two craniodental characters in differentiating the species. The results discard the dental folds, but support the zygomatic plate width, as diagnostic characters of O. josei. The current genetic, morphologic and geographic knowledge of the genus in the region suggest that historical questions remain to be solved.
