CASTELFRANCO, Diego. La América del Sud (1876-1880) y las perspectivas católicas sobre el vínculo entre la ciencia y el catolicismo en la Buenos Aires de fines del siglo XIX. Bol. Inst. Hist. Argent. Am. Dr. Emilio Ravignani [online]. 2017, n.47, pp.63-100. ISSN 0524-9767.
This article analyses the making of a discourse about science by different catholic actors in the 1870´s Argentina. The research is focused on the catholic journal La América del Sud (1876-1880), which may be considered as one of the main catholic organs of this period. The aforementioned topic is approached taking three issues into consideration: in the first place, the problematic of the catholic views regarding science is analyzed in the context of the contemporary disputes between catholics and anticlericals; secondly, these debates are inscribed in the larger frame of the confrontations that were taking place in Europe and the United States over the character of the relation between religion and science; finally, the convergence -or divergence- between the ideas expressed by La América del Sud and those formulated by the Archbishopric of Buenos Aires is observed.
