The return of cacique Inacayal's remains to Tecka town, Chubut, in 1994, marked the beginning of the restitution processes at the Museum de La Plata. These processes have taken place in two distinct periods differentiated by the adoption of an institutional policy. The restitution of human remains carried out during the first period was performed in compliance with national laws enacted specifically for the occasion. The second period includes those made since 2006, when the museum decided to deal with and analyze each claim. The factors involved in each case highlight the importance of examination and documentation of human remains, as well as of the existence of legal frameworks, face-to-face dialogue or mediation with claimants. The restitution of Inacayal, Mariano Rosas, Damiana, Capello and Selk'nam remains lead to the conclusion that each claim deserves to be individually analyzed in order to conduct a rigorous process.
