This article seeks to discuss the role that the presence of Brazilian cattle producers in northern Uruguay played in the political organization of that country and Brazil over the first five decades of the Uruguayan nation's existence. Observing data from diplomatic, legislative and fiscal documentation, I tried to observe the conformation of strategies that allowed the articulation of the demands of regional groups with the interests of the central power, demonstrating that alignments were circumstantial and required changes in the balance of forces between the different actors. The dynamics of the constitution of the regional elite are also discussed, showing their economic and political heterogeneity.
