This article delves into the discussion about the tension between education and the work situations of children and adolescents. It reviews current conceptual and academic discussions and adds some particular considerations regarding how it is put into play in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic, including the gender perspective. To do this, it reviews recent empirical studies in Argentina that offer new information on the realities of children and adolescents and their use of time. It adds primary information that refers to the case of the Partido de General Puerredon, Province of Buenos Aires. It is understood that it is at the local level, through qualitative approaches and at the micro-social level, where it is possible to know the dimensions that both boys and girls and their reference adults consider in the analysis of the opportunity cost between study and work in the face of changes in the daily life that the pandemic implied.
