MEDINA, Walter Manuel y CHARO, Melisa. GEOLOGICAL-PALEONTOLOGICAL HERITAGE OVER QUATERNARY COASTAL DEPOSITS ASSOCIATED WITH MARINE FOSSILS (SAN MATÍAS GULF, ARGENTINA). Ser. correl. geol. [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.1, pp.30-40. ISSN 1666-9479.
In recent years, the geological-palaeontological heritage is considered within environmental protection studies of the Argentine territory. The coasts of northern Patagonia, especially those of the San Matías Gulf contain littoral deposits of varied geologic origins, which associated with their faunal content of scientific interest, suggest that they can be considered as possessing potential heritage sites. The aim of this paper is to analyze three Quaternary sites of geological-palaeontological interest ("beachrocks"-Chama iudicai, paleocliffs-Tegula atra, and littoral rigdes-Anomalocardia brasiliana) to demonstrate its scientific importance and highlight which of them requires greater protection because of its heritage value. It is concluded that due to its Geo-conservation Index, the site of interest paleocliffs-Tegula atra requires immediate conserva-tion management and its incorporation into the scientific divulgation of the nature of the gulf and the Argentine Patagonia.
