Resumen

SELDES, Verónica  y  GHEGGI, María Soledad. Mortuary practices of Quebrada de Humahuaca ca. 500-1500 AD. Andes [online]. 2016, vol.27, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.

Mortuary practices of pre-Hispanic peoples of Quebrada de Humahuaca between ca. 500-1550 AD are approached from the study of the graves' characteristics and mortuary objects. The study of mortuary practices, that is, death rituals, funerary structures, contexts of burial and other practices related to death, is an interesting source of information that can account for the processes of social change, ethnic differentiation, identity and worldview, among others. More than ninety-six burials from the Formative, Regional Developments and Inca periods were recorded; accounting for more than a thousand accompanying funerary items which have been grouped into categories and functional classes. Results show that burials in reused domestic spaces predominate over time and that pottery is the element that remains preeminent in all periods.

Palabras clave : Mortuary practices; Social change; Quebrada de Humahuaca.
