From the 2001 Argentine electoral register, which includes all men and women over 18 years old, the surnames registered in the Province of Salta were considered. The surnames were analysed such as they were recorded there in order to group them according to their geographic and linguistic origin into two broad categories: autochthonous (from Amerindian origin) and foreign (corresponding to extra-American areas), subdivided into smaller categories. The surname's diversity and its frequency were estimated. In the 2001 electoral register, there were 647,330 individuals and 20,007 surnames, of which 8,079 were carried by a single individual (unique surnames). In this group, autochthonous surnames are a minority compared to foreign surnames. The results are interpreted in terms of the demographic and migratory history of the province and region. An important Spanish admixture to the modern population of Salta is proposed. Nevertheless, Hispanic surnames include other groups like the African colonial contribution and most of the autochthonous population.
