CHUECAS SALDIAS, Ignacio. Daughters of the portuguese nation: Endogamy and female identities in families of condemned as judaizantes (Lima, 1639. Andes [online]. 2018, vol.29, n.1, pp.00-00. ISSN 1668-8090.
This article aims to make a contribution to the perception of the complex dynamics that characterized the family groups present in the Peruvian Andes during the 17th century. The analysis includes an exploration into the list of individuals processed by the Auto de Fe held in Lima in 1639 and the text of the registration and disarmament of the Portuguese residents in Buenos Aires in 1643. During this period, the public voice and colonial reputation accuse these migrants of being Judaizers to such an extent that the gentilic Portuguese becomes synonymous with Jew . These individuals, whose ties with Portugal are extremely varied, will deploy their own family strategies. Fundamentally, this study analyzes two characteristic phenomena: matrimonial endogamy and female identities. The goal of this procedure is to visibilize an extremely active, and to some extent fundamental, aspect in the conformation of the seventeenth-century colonial society, as well as to contribute with the conceptualization of the ethnic, religious, social and cultural complexities that characterize the entities we can call families during this period.
