Resumen

GOLOVANEVSKY, Laura. Poverty culture, the new poor and the influence of labour transformations on ways of life: Some contributions from literature. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2004, n.24, pp.145-164. ISSN 1668-8104.

This paper aims to discuss popular culture based in three main themes: poverty culture, new poverty and the influence of labour transformations on ways of life. About the meaning of popular culture, in Grignon and Passeron framework, different authors are referred to, to conclude that between relativism (and its deformation, populism) and legitimism (and its extreme, miserliness), a medium point should be sought, which reflects conflicts and tensions in both of them. Another conclusion is that popular culture has its own mechanisms which differentiate it from high culture, but in a dominance relationship.    Poverty culture is analysed with Lewis vision, though considering the criticism this vision has received. Lewis emphasizes the positive aspects of poverty, which gives defense mechanisms that allows the poor to "go ahead". Lewis underlines the intergenerational transmission of poverty culture, the existence of their own ways and the consequences on the poor.    In Argentina, by the end of the XX century, not only have living conditions of many people worsen, but also a growing process of middle classes falling into poverty has taken place. This process has given place to relevant changes in daily practice of these groups. This subject is studied as "culture of the fall" in the newly poor. A link can also be pointed out between impoverishment and the weakening of salaried positions, and in this sense the paper refers to the influence of labour transformations in ways of life and popular culture.

Palabras clave : Popular culture; Poverty culture; New poverty; Labour transformations; Labour.
