Resumen

QUERO, Luis; ATENCIO, Ana María  y  PEREZ DE GUZMAN, Susana. Identification of causes and risk areas concerning maternal morbidity and mortality and its intervention in the province of Jujuy. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2009, n.37, pp.243-263. ISSN 1668-8104.

Reproduction is of vital importance to individual life as well as family life. Even though it often means a source of satisfaction and human wholeness, it occasionally implicates health risks, primarily in women.  Hence the central purpose of this research consist on describing the maternal morbidity and mortality risk-increase factors to provide information that will, eventually, facilitate public health services decision-making. To achieve this, this frame of work intends to weigh factors such as: areas of residence and age, as well as their relation to unwanted health results, such as: puerperal infections, bleeding, ruptures or any other obstetric complications, including maternal mortality. This information will be at the disposition of health institutions promptly. On a qualitative approach, we interpret and comprehend the attitude and interest shown by Maternal Health Services staff, regarding risk factors that could be present in the population that they watch over. This is relevant because whichever response they offer is directly linked to the health-disease concept people have built. Having a new ecological, holistic point of view, which takes account of personal, cultural, geographical and family conditions the population is immersed in, is imperative in order to be equipped to take action on disease and death prevention among women.

Palabras clave : Maternal health; Risk factors; Women of childbearing age; Risk areas of the Province of Jujuy; Social representations; Health personnel.
