Resumen

MOLFESE, E.R; ASTIZ, V  y  SEGHEZZO, M.L. Evaluación de la calidad del trigo candeal (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum) en los programas de mejoramiento de Argentina. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2017, vol.43, n.3, pp.303-311. ISSN 1669-2314.

The Laboratory of Industrial Quality of Grains of the Barrow Experimental Station of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) is the only laboratory in Argentina with equipment and methodologies that are adequate for the selection of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum).Genetic selection should be carried out considering parameters that are representative and meet the needs of the industry. The increase in the diversity and complexity of the analyses used to characterize industrial features has led the Laboratory of Industrial Quality of Grains to develop a Quality Index that brings together the most significant quality variables and facilitates the assessment and comparison of varieties and lines in breeding programs. The use of this index was limited because its hard calculation and dependence of absolute values. To solve this, the index was modified using a more rational scale, reconsidering attributes used for its calculating and considering those attributes weighted by factors according to their relative importance. This index allows calculating average indices for cultivars and assays, which, when being measured in a relative manner and under the same scale, are perfectly comparable. In breeding programs, this simplifies the comparison of new materials with control varieties. The management of the weighting factors allows orienting the selection towards previously fixed and agreed objectives of crop improvement. The application of this Index is necessary and obligatory, since its result should be reported by breeders for the consideration of new materials to be recorded. The Index has proved to be a dynamic and flexible instrument, able to adapt to methodological changes and conceptual updates. The aim of this review is to communicate the last modification made to this Quality Index and keep the actors involved in the creation of commercial varieties of durum wheat updated.
