This paper seeks to study a Spanish royal instructions of the 16th-Century written in order to support the territorial inspection and occupation of the Magellan Strait. Especially, it focuses on the discursive features of this documents which supported traveler's observation on ground by defining contents and practices. The premise of the article is that royal instructions were an instrument oriented to systematize natural and geographical data which were crucial in order to define the following steps of the Spanish crown in that Austral territory.
