ARAUJO, Emília y FONTES, Margarida. Mobility of researchers in Portugal: A gender approach . Rev. iberoam. cienc. tecnol. soc. [online]. 2013, vol.8, n.24, pp.9-43. ISSN 1850-0013.
Based on an empirical research conducted in Portugal, this paper addresses the relationship between scientific mobility and gender. Geographical mobility is increasingly discussed in the context of social studies of science and technology, but research on gender and mobility is still scarce. Drawing from existing studies on the role(s) of mobility and on gender issues in scientific careers, the paper draws attention to several changes regarding social relations of gender. The results suggest that the experience of mobility and the importance attributed to it vary between men and women. The research highlights some sources of variation, emphasizing the cultural patterns and sociopolitical contexts that lead women to have greater difficulties than men in engaging in long term mobility, as well as in reaping its potential benefits, despite some changes in men’s attitudes and behaviour. The paper concludes that academic and research careers are still fraught with gender inequalities, despite the discourse on merit and individual initiative that inspires the changes that women have undergone in recent years. Among these, evaluation mechanisms where mobility is valued as an indicator of internationalization emerge as an important source of inequality. These conclusions need to be taken in consideration in any reflection on the future of scientific research.
