Organic amendments are an important source of soil organic matter. Elucidating the decomposition dynamics of organic amendments is important to understand their contribution to soil fertility. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the formation of humic substances from the soil incorporation of rom ovine, bovine and guinea pig manures to crops of potato and maize at rates of 10 and 15 Mg ha-1, respectively. The study was performed at four locations. Soil samples were analyzed before manureincorporation and a day before crop harvest. The organic carbon content was determined in the humic substances by the Walkley-Black method, and for the extraction and fractionation of humic substances the method of Kononova-Belchikova was performed. As expected, soil amendment increased SOM at all locations and under potato and maize crops. Fulvic and humic acids, and humins, generally increased, but in some cases theydecreased; this variation could be related to local factors that affected the biological activity responsible for the decomposition of MOS and its later mineralization. CAF/CAH indexes were smaller than 1, indicating limited evolution of MOS.
