Open pit mining has stimulated social conflict in Latin America. Here we analyze how certain local dwellers imagine mining activities through two open interviews, one from Esquel (Chubut, Argentina) and another from Cerro de San Pedro (San Luis Potosí, México). In Esquel, "El Desquite" mining project was rejected by the population; while in Cerro de San Pedro, Minera San Xavier successfully started its operations despite a strong opposition. We propose theoretical approaches for the interviews' comparison and discuss the hypothesis of "mining tradition" and "jobs or environment", to defend the relevance of political processes in local culture and its intervention on territory disputes.
