Intersecciones antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.2, pp.203-220. The lithic raw materials present in the middle basin of the Uruguay River are frequently mentioned in the archaeology of northeastern Argentina and neighboring areas due to the abundance of primary outcrops and secondary deposits of igneous, cryptocrystalline, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks that are ideal for lithic production. With the aim of contributing to the determination and classification of the geological resources selected by pre-Hispanic populations for lithic industries, the results of macroscopic and petrographic characterization of the lithologies represented in an archaeological context located on the western bank of the middle basin of the Uruguay River, in the department of Monte Caseros (Corrientes Province), will be presented. In addition to identifying the most commonly used rocks, the presence and use of a raw material that has not been previously documented in the study area, silicified basic vitreous tuffs, are reported. The characteristics that have allowed their classification are described, and their inclusion in the regional resource base is debated. Furthermore, the achieved results go beyond the archaeological scale of analysis and contribute to geological knowledge regarding the presence of outcrops of pyroclastic rocks in the Paraná-Etendeka basin.
