Resumen

We report the results of a qualitative research carried out in the context of a teacher training program. The objective was to document and characterize the conceptions of future teachers with respect to modeling in the teaching of mathematics. We identified the conceptions of two groups of pedagogy of mathematics students with different levels of progress in their training. The qualitative data obtained systematically through an interview, a written report describing the design of an instructional activity, and Likert scale questionnaires were analyzed. The results allow us to define different nuances that shape the participants' conceptions of modeling, different from those reported in the literature; these can be characterized according to the meaning given to the modeling term, the conceptions about the rol of modeling in the classroom and the characteristics of modeling tasks. We found that the participants show different conceptions that depend on the stage of their professional training. The results of this work are proposed as a contribution to teacher educators in order to encourage activities that favor the construction of conceptions in future teachers to enhance the development of modeling skills.
