AMBRUSTOLO, Pablo y BERETTA, Marcelo. Pinnipeds exploitation in rock shelters from north coast of santa cruz (Patagonia Argentina): initial trends. Comechingonia [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.2, pp.1-10. ISSN 1851-0027.
In recent years a systematic program has been implemented to survey the prehistoric use of rock shelters located in the vicinity of the Deseado estuary, in the Santa Cruz province. In this paper we present the results of zooarchaeological studies on pinnipeds bone assemblages recorded at three sites located on the north coast of Santa Cruz. The initial trends regarding the capture, transport and exploitation of sea lions are presented and discussed within the framework of the occupation of the mentioned contexts by hunter-gatherer human groups during the middle and late Holocene. Results suggest the existence of variations in the exploitation strategies of the resources in the shelter spaces. These changes are observed in sites with different chronologies and according to the ranges, prey sizes and the distance to the procurement locations.
