Medicinal plants in The Alerces National Park, Chubut, Argentinean Patagonia. The aim of this study was to identify the medicinal plants used by the old residents in The Alerces National Park and to relate this information with medicinal species richness in the area. An interview was employed with 16 local people settled in the National Reserve who had knowledge of medicinal plants, past or not to make use of them. The interviews were semi-structured, in writing and completed individually by the interviewer. They included ten questions that gathered information regarding the use of medicinal plants, methods of preparation and implementation, frequency of use, location of plants in the field of protected area, ways to collect or collection of species and the mode of acquisition of such knowledge. Residents mentioned the use of 42 species of medicinal value, distributed in 24 families, of which the best represented were Lamiaceae (21.4%) and Asteraceae (14.2%). The 58, 5% of medicinal plants cited by the settlers were alien species. The most frequent uses were for digestive disorders, decreasingly followed by respiratory, cardiovascular and skin diseases. By comparing the total wealth of medicinal species in the Park and those recorded from the interviews, the study shows that local people only uses 28.6% of what is available in the area.
