Resumen

OSTENGO, Santiago et al. Evaluation of cold tolerance of the TUC 00-19 sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) variety. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2015, vol.92, n.2, pp.1-6. ISSN 1851-3018.

The sugarcane area in the Tucuman province (R. Argentina) gets exposed to occasional freezes of different severity. This has a negative impact on the sugarcane (Saccharum spp.), causing a drop in sucrose and an increase in simple sugars, acidity and various harmful substances that reduce the sugar recovery in the factory. In this sense it is important to characterize each new sugarcane cultivar with respect to its post-freeze performance. This work studied the cold-tolerance of the TUC 00-19, a variety released in 2013 by the Sugarcane Breeding Program of Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres (Tucumán, Argentina). Sucrose, simple sugars, true purity and acidity in the juice extracted from three varieties, TUC 00-19, LCP 85-384 and TUCCP77-42 were assessed at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after the first freeze. The last two were used as the control varieties with known good and low cold-tolerance, respectively. The decline in sucrose and true purity at 35 days after the first freeze was less in the TUC 00-19 than in either of the two controls. However, the differences between the TUC 00-19 and LCP 85-384 were not statistically significant. Regarding the juice acidity, statistically significant increase occurred in all varieties seven days post-freeze. The TUC 00-19 and LCP 85-384 showed less acidity (higher pH) than TUCCPP 77-42 at all evaluation dates. These results characterize the TUC 00-19 as a cultivar with good tolerance against freeze damage.

Palabras clave : new cultivar; post-freeze damage; sucrose.
