Resumen

SALVARREDI, Leonardo. microRNAs: New Factors in Lipid Metabolism. Rev. argent. endocrinol. metab. [online]. 2014, vol.51, n.2, pp.75-84. ISSN 1851-3034.

The role of microRNAs (miRs) in cellular processes such as differentiation, apoptosis, and proliferation as well as their alteration in diseases such as cancer are well known. However, there is little knowledge about the role of miRs in lipid metabolism and associated disorders. Recently, it has been shown that these molecules play an important role in lipid homeostasis by regulating post-transcriptional level expression of genes involved in this metabolism. It has also been observed that lipoproteins, mainly high-density lipoproteins (HDL), are capable of transporting miRs, enabling cellular communication between distant tissues, establishing a mutual regulation. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms involved in these processes opens up new possibilities for the development of therapeutic approaches for metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.
