The article analyzes the Argentina-Brazil relations during the 1976-1983 period when dictatorial regimes ruled both countries. It explains their macroeconomic evolution, and the influence on their respective external policies; at the same time, these have to be associated with the Cold War context and the role played by the United States of America on the continent. Thus, both governments kept ambiguous relations. On one hand, they held controversial positions in the region; on the other hand, they kept their historical commercial interchange, including several cooperation agreements which finally resulted in birth to the Mercardo Común del Sur.
