Phyton (B. Aires) [online]. 2004, vol.73, pp.103-109. ISSN 1851-5657.
This paper analyses the effects of salinity on the proportions and conformation of the root tissues in Pappophorum philippianum Parodi. Two levels of salinity were studied: solutions with electrical conductivity at 1 mS/cm (Ct) and at 18 mS/cm (C18). For anatomical studies nodal root sections were taken at 10 cm from the apices and permanent histological preparations were obtained. Images tissue-preparations were digitalized and percentages of each tissues, wall thickness of the exodermis, area of the exodermis wall cell and the frequency distribution of the xylem vessel elements diameters were determined. The proportion of the parenchyma and vascular tissues were not affected by salinity. However, the proportion of the corticals fibers diminished and the proportion of the endoermis and exodermis rose significantly.Salinity affected the inner diameter of the xylem vessel elements.
