Resumen

NUNEZ, Carlos Eduardo  y  YBARRA, Liliana. Microscopic structure of the twig of grinded yerba mate. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2015, n.23, pp.13-17. ISSN 1851-7587.

Yerba mate is composed of pieces of leaves and fragments of annual stems. In the present work, we analyzed the anatomy of the latter and found that they consist of an outer ring composed of fibers and longitudinal vessels, a central part composed of globose cells without perforations, and a thin ring of longitudinal vessels that divides these areas. The relative area of each of these zones was found to be 67, 23 and 10% respectively. The total free area in cross sections was 39.6% and in vessels 18.6%. The diameter of the peripheral vessels was between 11 and 42 microns and that of the intermediate ring between 8 and 13 microns. The diameter of the fibers was between 5 and 12 microns and that of the pits between 0.8 and 4 microns. The diameter of the cells of the central region was between 80 and 100 microns.
