Resumen

MUSCIO, Hernán Juan et al. SCALES, SPACE AND PATTERNS OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL RECORD OF THE MATANCILLAS AND NACIMIENTO GORGES, SAN ANTONIO DE LOS COBRES (PUNA OF SALTA, ARGENTINA). Relaciones [online]. 2021, vol.46, n.2, pp.21-30. ISSN 0325-2221.

This work discusses the archaeological patterns ofthe Nacimiento and Matancillas localities -Puna of Salta (Argentina)- by using decreasing inclusivity spatialanalysis units andarchitectural, zooarchaeological, ceramic and lithic evidence. Whereas Nacimiento displays a dwelling buildingprocess that shaped extensive palimpsests of artifact distributions, in Matancillas this process isobserved with less extensive architectural palimpsests and more site aggregation. This suggeststhe prevalence of extensive and logistical use of space strategies in Nacimiento since the lateearly Holocene, and a higher residentiality and more intensive use of space in Matancillas, dueto ecological factors that conditioned long-term human occupation, particularly the altitudedifferences and the unevenpresence of water and hunting game distribution. Finally, we show howthe archaeological record, approached through different spatial units, can report on differencesin past adaptations as a result of long-term ecological conditions at different scales.

Palabras clave : spatial scales; archaeological landscapes; archaeology of the puna; human adaptation; mobility.
