CABALLERO FLORENTIN, Andrea Margarita et al. Valoración de prevalencia de tabaquismo en universitarios según auto-reporte y medición de monóxido de carbono exhalado. Rev. am. med. respir. [online]. 2015, vol.15, n.3, pp.213-215. ISSN 1852-236X.

Introduction: Worldwide questionnaires self-administered are used as a means of monitoring and surveillance tobacco consumption; the measurement of exhaled carbon monoxide (ECM), is used as a biomarker of smoke inhalation. The objective was to assess the prevalence of tobacco self-reported in students of university and measurement of ECM as a mechanism to determine the validity of the results. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study with an analytical component. 321 students answered the questionnaire and we proceeded to measurement ECM using a portable analyzer (PiCOSmo-kerlyzer®). The cipher of ECM was considered positive with a value = 6 ppm. Results: of the total, 214 (66.7%) male and 107 (33.3%) female. 180 (56.1%) reported being non-smokers and 141 (43.9%) smokers. The mean levels of ECM were 10.5 ppm and 4.2 ppm for smokers to non-smokers; 37 non-smokers (20.6%) had a score = 6 ECM ppm. Conclusion: Smoking prevalence by self report and ECM in this group is high. ECM tests have high sensitivity if exposure has been minutes before measurement.
