Galicia’s print on our founding imaginary is not proportional to its great demographical importance. As it happens with Native American, Galician identity is deeply hidden and scarcely visible in many respects. This work proposes several reasons for this oblivion, or else, this purposeful covering: the outrageous meaning that the name “Gallego” (later on, a synonym for “Spaniard” in Argentina) already had in the Iberian Peninsula; the burden of several disdainful features of this ethnical stereotype; the rejection of the Spanish cultural matrix subsistent after the Independence War; the quick abandonment of Galician language for the more prestigious Castilian. Even when the Argentinian intellectuals begin to rescue the Spanish heritage, most of them don’t include Galicia. And, although the press of Galician associations and the elites of Galician artists and writers try to reverse this tendency, it isn’t enough to influence the Argentinian society, or even people of Galician descent. But nowadays, there are renewed “galleguista” movements that aim at the acknowledgment of Galician identity as one of the hidden pillars of Argentinian identity. Likewise, the Argentinian contribution has also proved fundamental for the construction of Galician peninsular identity.
