Resumen

CATTANEO, Constanza. Architecture to discipline. Reconstructing the operation of the Santa Lucia military base, Tucumán-Argentina. (1975-1983). Rev. Mus. Antropol. [online]. 2022, vol.15, n.3, pp.07-20. ISSN 1852-060X.  http://dx.doi.org/http://doi.org/10.31048/1852.4826.v15.n3.36085.

The Santa Lucía base, Dpto. Monteros, Tucumán functioned as a clandestine detention center (CCD) between February 1975 and 1982. Hundreds of residents and their families passed through it, the vast majority of whom were former workers of the Santa Lucia sugar mill and the sugar colonies linked to it. Based on the archaeological survey work and crossing interviews with survivors between 2014 and 2019, we present an extension of the reconstruction of the use of the facilities of the old mill as part of the CCD carried out in previous works (2014, 2015). Through an analysis of constructive form, visibility and movement, it was analyzed how the space of the old mill was restructured for operation. The hypothesis is that certain modifications were made for greater control of the space and of the detainees within it, as a panopticon. We present new data on features of CCD that have previously gone unreported. From what has been done, we want to contribute to the reflection on the close link between space and traumatic memory, between architecture and control of the bodies of the detained-disappeared, and the role of professionals in these contexts.
