FABREZI, Marissa et al. ¿Qué es lo nuevo en la evolución morfológica?. Cuad. herpetol. [online]. 2014, vol.28, n.2, pp.119-136. ISSN 1852-5768.
A review of concepts and definitions used in Comparative Anatomy, Evolutionary Biology and Evo-Devo is presented. The available information about the morphological variation in the monophyletic clade of horned frogs Ceratophryidae (Ceratophrys, Chacophrys y Lepidobatrachus) provides the set of derived features that we considered as examples to discuss: evolutionary processes with morphological consequences (reduction, lost, reversion, neoformation); origin of variation (heterochrony, heterometry, heterotopy, heterotipy), and the morphological novelty sensu stricto. From the Evo-Devo perspective we analyzed novelties in which new role is achieved and developmental constraints are disrupted. The ontogeny of Lepidobatrachus, with the reduction of morphological, physiological, and ecological differences between larvae and adults seems to represent an excellent model to learn and discuss classical and novel concepts with integrated data from different approaches (developmental genetic, morphology, ecology, physiology).
