In Recursos Humanos and Efectos colaterales, Gabriela Liffschitz composes a series of verbal and visual self-portraits that show a specific body: the body of a woman who has breast cancer. Refusing to write a melodrama or to disguise the marks of the disease, Liffschitz presents beauty and even femininity as artifice. Taking the form of books and photographic exhibitions, visual therapy or illustrated poetic prose, Liffschitz's work belongs to no genre but simultaneously navigates through all of them. It does not call for an autonomous reading of photographic production but requires to be read in connection with the photographer's experience while avoiding the easy display of reality or the innocence of visual testimony. Emerged in an age of relative destruction of aesthetic autonomy, Liffschitz's images do not replicate codes of good or bad photography, nor the discourse on cancer, not even the photographed object. They are diasporic images: neither reality nor fiction, and at the same time, both fiction and reality. They challenge us by suggesting that we never are or even have a body but we earn or lose it, we surrender it to pleasure or desire.
