Since the four UN Conferences on Women (1975-1995), gender equality and women’s empowerment have been recognised as a multi-faceted global norm, supported by UN-centred institutional architecture. Since the 1980s, feminists from both North and South have fought to make sexual health and reproductive rights a central component of that norm. An analysis of this struggle brings to the fore complex alliances they have forged, opponents they have faced and richer understandings emerging as new generations gain voice.
