The swiss physician Johann Rengger traveled to Paraguay in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Ensayo Historico sobre la Revolución del Paraguay y el gobierno dictatorio del Doctor Francia and Viaje al Paraguay en los años 1818 a 1826, published, re-spectively, in 1827 and, posthumously, in 1835, are some of his publications that resulted from this trip. Comprehended as inventories of observations made on the fauna and flora, and the mores from the visited regions, the voyage reports are inevitably marked by the experience of their authors with the otherness and the space traveled. It is worth mentioning that the description of the nature and the landscape made by travelers from the beginning of the nineteenth century were built in dialogue with aesthetic expressions in force in the period, such as the sublime and picturesque, revealing, in Rengger’s case, a careful look particular to the sociocultural context in which it was inserted. Considering those assumptions, we propose ourselves to present and discuss the descriptions and evaluations made by Rengger on the Paraguayan landscape, in the light of the aesthetic orientations of the period, as well as on the relations that its inhabitants maintained with the nature.
