Poverty is a predominant feature in the societies that are settled in the Argentinean Norte Grande Region This region is included as Rofman (1999), termed the "periphery" of the Argentine territorial system,where economic processes show signs of backwardness within the capitalist system, with a persistent presence of non-capitalist forms of production. In this context, probably one of the most complex urban poverty situations is a phenomenon refl ected in the specifi c characteristics of the current economy and its social features, because it prevents the integration of groups of assets into the productive system itself. This study aims to characterize all the provincial capitals that make up the Norte Grande region, using as its main source the Household Material Deprivation (IPMH) composite indicator used in the 2001 national census.
