Resumen

JONES, Daniel Eduardo  y  CUNIAL, Santiago. Parliamentary defeat and new political positions of religious actors: the Alianza Cristiana de Iglesias Evangélicas de la República Argentina opposition to the same-sex marriage law. Soc. relig. [online]. 2012, vol.22, n.37. ISSN 1853-7081.

In a Latin-American context of cultural and religious pluralism, there is a reactivation of dogmatism within religions. Some religious actors see threatrened its world's conceptions, especifically, those conceptions about sexuality. This article's objective is to analyse the main Evangelical conservative federation -the Alianza Cristiana de Iglesias Evangélicas de la República Argentina (ACIERA)- and its actions to reject the legal reform of the Civil Code to include same-sex marriage. Based on documentary sources and in-deep interviews to evangelical leaders, this article analyses if the same-sex marriage law's approval in July of 2010 was necessarily a political defeat for ACIERA, and conjectures this political process' effects in future debates. The article concludes that ACIERA widened its public acknowledgement and increased its political power, especially in relation with other actors of Argentinean religious field, obtaining a strategic alliance with the Catholic Church hierarchy, which could be repeated in the discussion about abortion.

Palabras clave : Evangelicals; Argentina; Same-sex marriage; Conservative activism.
