Resumen

REBOLLEDO FICA, Eunice Noemí. Education and democracy in the reform discourse of Liberal Protestantism in Argentina (1900-1930). Soc. relig. [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.50, pp.62-85. ISSN 1853-7081.

Between the late XIX and the early XX centuries, Argentina witnessed the appearance of a movement called liberal Protestantism, formed by a religious, anti-clerical minority that participated in the political-educational debates on citizenship. Amidst the tensions inherent to the period between 1900 and 1930, which Ansaldi (1994) characterizes as those of the bourgeois hegemony, the monthly publication "La Reforma: revista de religión, educación, historia y ciencias sociales (revista de revistas)" [THE REFORM: Journal of Religion, Education, History and Social Sciences (journal of journals)] started to publish a line of discourse which promoted a cultural, educational and political reform. This journal, which supported educational initiatives in partnership with the State, hints at the dissemination of texts that formed part of a considerable body of work addressing the issues inherent to the construction of a democratic republic in the face of unresolved social issues. This paper seeks to analyze, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the discourse surrounding such issues, characterized by traditions inherited from the Protestant religion, liberal philosophy and a discourse based on the consolidating democracies and Republican regimes of the United States of America and Canada. The political and ideological connection between liberal Protestantism and the political powers permeated the journal's publications and provides a framework for interpreting the specific context surrounding the expansion of both the Argentinian State and its political rights.
