This paper describes a group of first-semester students entering the Mechanical Engineering program at the Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala in Mexico. The paper identifies several didactic strategies aligned with a distance course and the Next Generation Scientific Standards reference framework. Furthermore, the paper incorporates modeling of basic concepts and reflective thinking as part of the transversal concept. The proposed strategy is to lead students to the basic modeling of the fundamental concepts of Newtonian me-chanics, so that they recognize the system of physical principles and concepts that are associated with Newton's three laws of motion. The strategy begins by showing real-world phenomena or experiments through short videos, for the construction of pictorial repre-sentations that are typical of science and technology. In parallel to the class, students work on a project that is linked to the previous concepts as they advance in their development. The results indicate that the students were able to anchor some real-world phenomena with important concepts through models, although they still have some semantic problems.
